Just the wicket

A Pembrokeshire school team has won the Welsh girls’ Kwick Cricket final.

Tavernspite, which won the Pembrokeshire-wide competition earlier this month, beat another county team, Coastlands, in the final at the Swalec stadium in Cardiff, last week.

The contest was a repeat of the Pembrokeshire finals, where Tavernspite again came out on top.

Tavernspite will now play in the UK-wide final at Headingley, in July.

This year, seven schools - Tavernspite, Coastlands, Haverfordwest VC, Goodwick, Ger Y Llan, Croesgoch, St Teilo’s – and almost 75 youngsters – took part in the Pembrokeshire leg of the annual primary schools competition.

The festival was organised in Pembrokeshire by Sport Pembrokeshire, in association with the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches It is designed to increase interest in the sport among youngsters.

Kwick Cricket uses an orange softball and plastic equipment and and can be played on any flat surface inside or out. Councillor Rob Lewis, cabinet member for sport and leisure, said it was great to see a Pembrokeshire team win the national tournament.

“Well done to Tavernspite and also congratulations to Coastlands, which also did well to get to the finals,” he added.

“Their achievement and the numbers taking part in the Pembrokeshire final shows the strength of girls’ cricket in the county and how much it has developed over recent years.”

Sport Pembrokeshire cricket development officer, Matthew Freeman, said that it was now hoped to run a regional under-13 girls cricket development centre during the winter, targeting girls that had taken part in the girls’ festival, as well as pupils in year seven in secondary schools.

“We hope to set up a regional squad at under 13 level next summer,” he added.
