Tame draw as Whitland struggle

Whitland (166 for 8) drew with Cresselly (256 for 7)

Cresselly’s powerful batting line-up ensured that they set Whitland a huge target but their bowlers were unable to winkle out the dogged home batsmen and they had to settle for a draw, where they at least received all the bonus points for being so far ahead.

Leading the way again for Cresselly were their three main run-getters in Andrew Harris (11 fours in his 76|) and Phil Williams (ten fours in 55) put on 127 runs for the first wicket before Williams became one of keeper Steve Fraser’s four victims from a good catch. Simon Cole maintained the momentum for Cresselly, with four fours and four big sixes in his 65, supported by double figures from Adam Chandler (13), Ryan Lewis (14) and Julian Arthur (13). Mark Lee was the pick of the Whitland bowling with 4 for 50 and Paul Webb picked up three wickets but at an unusually costly 80 runs, as Cresselly scored quickly throughout.

Whitland’s Paul Davies (31) and Ed John (26) batted well and Kevin Pearce struck seven fours in his 42, as Whitland looked comfortable on 97 for 2 wickets.

But Simon Cole’s off-spin earned him figures of 3 for 22 to slow things down alongside James Venables and Lyn Richards, who shared four wickets. Whitland held on through Mark Lee and Bobby Webb (16), before the latter was run out off the last ball of the match, with a draw already assured as the result.
