Johnston 3
Goodwick United 3

Johnston goalkeeper Jim Payne was the villain and hero as this high-octane clash at Glebelands finished in a draw.

The Johnston stopper was at fault for the visitors’ first goal, but right at the death he pulled off a superb save to deny Tom Jones scoring the winner from the penalty spot.

Top of the table Goodwick United have seen their lead cut to within a point after they dropped precious away points.

The home side took the lead within a minute as Adam Hawkins caused mayhem in the visitors’ box and Simon Ormond tucked the ball into an empty net from six yards.

Within six minutes and the visitors squared matters with Payne spilling a Wayne O’Sullivan free kick in the box and Jones netted from close range.

But the Tigers scored two sensational goals that gave them a deserved 3-1 cushion at the interval. A tremendous build-up where the visitors didn’t touch the ball and ended with Scott Murray placing his shot beyond the reach of Carl Woodhouse.

The third was the strike of the season, where Damien Ellis unleashed a 30 yard rocket that flew in the top corner.

It is up there as one of the best goals scored at Glebelands.

But in the second half Goodwick boss Bernie Armstrong brought on substitutes Rob Morgans, Karl Hedley and Patrick Hughes as they went for broke.

Nigel Delaney pulled one back and Skipper Wayne O’Sullivan added an equaliser setting up a tense and nervous finish.

Just before the final whistle and high drama followed with Delaney being felled in the box by defender Richard Davies and hero Payne pulled off a brilliant save and deny Jones from netting the winner from the penalty spot.
