THE make do and mend atmosphere of the World War Two home front will be brought to life during a special murder mystery event at Carew Castle.

Don’t Panic, by Harvey’s Players, takes place on July 27 and 28.

Back for the third year, Harvey’s Players will be mystifying their guests (if not regaling them with laughter), with the usual suspicious characters embroiled in a tangle of intrigue and dastardly deeds. Over a buffet meal, diners will have the opportunity to question suspects individually, in the hope of finding the guilty party.

The year is 1943, and it’s Carew’s summer highlight – the annual flower and produce show- never more important than in the days of rationing and austerity.

In fields and gardens, and down on the allotment, spades have been busy digging for victory, and that’s not just victory against Herr Hitler, but for the more serious business of victory in nurturing the best home-grown marrow; and then a murder is announced.

Additional help from would-be sleuths is requested to solve this heinous crime; there is even a prize for the winners, so do come along with your magnifying glasses and little grey cells.

Fancy dress is optional, but normal dress-code for this prestigious event is afternoon frocks and hats for ladies, and suits or uniforms for gentlemen.

This is an indoor event, held in the Lesser Hall, heated by a roaring log fire.

The Players are indebted to nearby Carew Control Tower for the generous loan of original uniforms.

In keeping with the 40s theme, an additional prize will be awarded to the best Vera Lynn look-alike.

Why not make it a weekend of wartime nostalgia by following up with a visit to the old aerodrome , open Sundays 10-3pm, or make a diary note for Wings Over Carew Show on August 11, with chance to see a Spitfire fly-past, parachute display, and lots more.
