NEWCASTLE Emlyn’s Attic Players present their winter production ‘Foolish Fishgirls and The Pearl’ - a gentle family comedy about mermaids, love and lost treasure.

The play is set in Sea Hags, a seaside B&B and café run by two sisters, Oceana and Coral. Alas, times are hard and the B&B has seen better days.

It is a cold, miserable day in early January when the play takes place and the weather forecast is for a major storm to hit, bringing with it snow and high winds. “What a way to start the New Year,” says Coral, “flat broke and snowbound.”

But things are about to get just a little bit more interesting.

A coastguard by the name of Nathan claims to have been saved from drowning by a mermaid! By an odd twist of fate, he ends up in the B&B needing a room for the night when he gets stranded by the blizzard.

Here he meets a regular customer by the name of Floyd who has his own mermaid tale to tell. Add in the appearance of the very mermaid who saved Nathan’s life and the revelation of just a couple of other well-hidden secrets, and the play rolls along, at times anarchically, to a happy but perhaps unpredictable end.

To accompany the play, the audience are invited to enjoy an immersive experience, so why not come and indulge in some festive fare with mince pies and mulled wine being served by members of the Sea Hags café.

And please make sure your children enter the colouring competition to win a share of the mermaid’s treasure – every mermaid has her own stash of gold and jewels. All of the entries will be displayed in the theatre.

And to round off the performances, the resident ‘DJ’ will be providing a suitable musical backdrop to the proceedings. So come along and enjoy a couple of hours of entertainment at The Attic Theatre, Newcastle Emlyn’s own splendid little theatre.

The show runs from November 28 through to December 1. Doors open at 7pm each evening and there is a matinée on December 1 with doors opening at 2pm.

The colouring competition is free and the sheets can be downloaded from The Attic Players website atticplayers.org.uk.

Tickets are available from Fair and Fabulous in Newcastle Emlyn or from atticplayers.org.uk
