THREE generations of Welsh artists are featured in the latest exhibition at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery.

Bloodlines, which opened last Friday, showcases the work of David Charles Edwards, John Uzzell Edwards and Charles Uzzell Edwards, widely known as urban artist Pure Evil.

David Charles Edwards (1903-1961) was the father of John and the grandfather of Charles. He worked a miner in Ogilvie Colliery in the Rhymney Valley but was also a painter.

Sadly, only two of his works survive, both of which will feature in the exhibition, and which reveal a real talent. It was David who instilled in John the love of art and desire to be an artist. David died tragically in a mining accident, aged 58.

Both John and Charles’ work have been previously exhibited together at the museum.

As John’s wife Mary wrote for the exhibition: “John Uzzell Edwards’ work returns to Tenby Museum and Art Gallery like homing pigeons, each time showing work with a different theme.

"This eclectic exhibition has come from the large, battered plan-chest where John kept all his works on paper.

"The ones here travel from the 1960s, with the haunting ‘Kynaston House, Caldey Island’, past Roman film-posters, across Ireland on horseback, then returning to his beloved Wales, with its Celtic past, and more recent times of unrest.

“And still more faces. Or more, still, faces. Echoing the last exhibition here, ‘Face to Face’, a month after John’s unexpected death in 2014, which showed son Charley’s haunting work opposite John’s, faces eyeing each other across the gallery. They’re still doing it….”

Curator Mark Lewis said: “The museum is extremely honoured to have the works of these three generations on show. John remains one of the most important of Welsh artists and Charley is now an extremely well-known and widely-collected urban artist.

"It feels right to have this exhibition here, at this time and to celebrate the huge talent over many generations in what would have been John’s 85th year. I am hugely grateful to Mary and the family for all their support and dedication to making this exhibition possible.”

This sales exhibition runs until Saturday, November 15.
