Two Broad Haven School gymnasts will take centre stage when they represent Wales at the British championships today (Saturday).

Eight-year-old Niamh Edwards and 11-year-old Abi Rees, who won the Welsh championships in the girls’ sports acrobatics competition at the Welsh Gymnastics Championships in February, are heading to Stoke for the British finals. Niamh, who has been doing gymnastics for about two years, said: “I like doing all the dances and routines. It’s fun and it keeps you healthy and fit.”

Last year, Niamh came second in the Welsh championships, while the Broad Haven School boys’ team took bronze at the British championships on floor and vault.

Headteacher Andy Williams said: “We have got pockets of incredible talent here in Broad Haven, and it’s great to see it recognised on a national stage and further afield. This achievement outlines the sort of expertise we have got in the community.”

He added: “We are very proud of the continued success that they are having in gymnastics and sport in general. Although we’re a small school, we have done very well on the sporting scene.

"We do everything we can to support our gymnasts - all the opportunities we give to the children are really important, especially if they take part in further competitions and go on to represent the country."

Mr Williams said that as of next year, the whole school will have the opportunity to do gymnastics, thanks to Milford Haven Gymnastics Club coach Andy Grey.

He said: “Milford Haven Gymnastics Club, and its facilities and experts, is an excellent provision which all the junior children should have access to. So now we’re opening it up to the whole school.”

Coach Andy Grey added: “Coming from a small village school, this is an absolutely fine example of the talent that our youngsters in Pembrokeshire have. And the more children out there that take up sport, the better they will get."

He added: “Without the support from the authority, little of this would be going ahead.”
