Newspaper editors are being urged to fight the Private Members Bill that would allow MPs to exempt themselves from the Freedom of Information Act (FoI).

The FoI is used regularly by the Merc so we asked MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, Stephen Crabb, his thoughts on MPs being exempt from FoIs.

MP Stephen Crabb said: "I have not had a detailed look at the Private Members BilI yet.

"However, I am totally in favour of FoIs being done on MP salaries and anything paid by taxpayer money."

"Where I am slightly nervous though is where FoIs would possibly reveal confidential letters from constituents to their MPs and any of my correspondence."

I would not want a constituent to write to me in confidence and then for it to be revealed because a FoI has been requested."

"I would endorse the Mercury's position and I would not like to see a dilution of the FoIs."

Some of the FoIs the Mercury has requested include the amount of money raised by speed camera fines and the amount of drugs seized in county towns.

The Merc also exposed the salary of chief executive of the county council Bryn Parry-Jones.

The more quirky among findings the Merc has uncovered using the FoI include the number of UFO and black cat sightings throughout the county.
