Pembrokeshire residents are being urged not to give money to people knocking their door claiming to be raising money for university research.

Cardiff University has issued a warning following reports households in Fishguard have been targeted by fake fundraisers asking for donations.

The University does not authorise fundraising door-to-door and is urging people, especially elderly and vulnerable residents, to be wary of anyone who knocks on their door asking for money.

“Cardiff University never participates in or authorises door-to-door fundraising,” insists Cardiff University’s Director of Development and Alumni Relations, TJ Rawlinson.

“We were deeply concerned when we were contacted by a Pembrokeshire couple telling us someone knocked on their door saying they were raising money for Cardiff University.

“We’ve reported the incident to Action Fraud and want to make sure as many people as possible know that this is a scam.”

Whilst the University hopes this was an isolated incident they are keen to ensure other residents aren’t tempted to hand over money.

TJ added: “Our advice is simple: don’t give money to anyone who knocks your door claiming to be raising funds for Cardiff University, they are fraudsters.

“Any money donated will not benefit our students or our world-leading research. If anyone has a similar experience they should get in touch or report it to Action Fraud.”

Cardiff University is a registered charity. Donations help the University fund scholarships and bursaries, provide new facilities and support life-changing research.
