PEMBROKESHIRE People First (PPF), the charity run by and for people with learning disabilities, is hoping to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative thus winter.

The charity has applied for a Tesco grant to help members develop their own social activities.

“People with learning disabilities or autistic spectrum conditions can be especially isolated,” said chief officer, Karen Chandler.

“We take for granted that we can pop to see our friends, or get involved in our communities. With public transport cuts, enduring preconceptions, and specific barriers such as places being too crowded or intimidating, our members risk real isolation and loneliness.

“We would like to support them to develop activities that they want to do, as opposed to what staff think, and gain skills in organising and running inclusive, safe, social spaces.”

PPF is in with a chance of winning either £4,000, £2,000 or £1,000 depending on how many votes they get in Tesco’s Haverfordwest and Goodwick stores. All the money has been raised from the 5p bag levy.

Customers in Haverfordwest and Goodwick can cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

"Receiving the Bags of Help funding would mean the world to PPF members,” said Karen. “It will help them take control, develop activities that are important to them, and take their rightful place in the heart of our communities."

Tesco’s Bags of Help funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp.
