PARKING concerns at Gelliswick VC school have prompted a re-think of current arrangements.

Pembrokeshire County Council proposes to introduce two short lengths of ‘no waiting’ between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, on Gelliswick Road.

The restrictions are being implemented following a site meeting between the council’s traffic engineer; headteacher Nick Dyer and local councillor Viv Stoddart.

At this meeting, concerns were raised about on-street parking during school times, with pick-up and drop-off times unsurprisingly the busiest.

The restrictions aim to remove parking at two locations and create passing places, assisting traffic flow.

A council spokesman said: "The restrictions will be monitored post-implementation to determine their effectiveness and whether further measures are considered necessary.

"Parents and staff are also being encouraged to use the drop-off point in the region of the rugby club as well as the parking area located on Haven Drive.

"These steps, in addition to those above, will help contribute to improve traffic flows and road safety on Gelliswick Road."

Cllr Stoddart, who represents the Hubberston ward, said: "The council have received a stream of complaints regarding what has been described as dangerous traffic chaos at dropping off and picking up times at the school.

"According to the council, the aim of the restrictions is to create two lengths where opposing traffic can pass at times when the remainder of the road is occupied by parents delivering and collecting pupils."

She added: "The 8am to 5pm restriction caters for the school day, leaving the evenings and overnight free while the Monday to Fridays only restriction will free up parking on the road at weekends.

"I have also stressed to the council and the school, that if teachers, visitors to the school, and parents used the designated parking at the rugby club, this would ease the traffic situation."

A plan outlining the proposed restrictions is currently being formally advertised, and is available to view at County Hall.

Anyone wishing to object to the order should give their reasons in writing to PCC's head of infrastructure Darren Thomas at County Hall, Haverfordwest SA61 1TP or email traffic@pembrokeshire.gov.uk by Wednesday, October 3.
