A Milford Haven woman had ‘no idea’ that she was banned from driving until she was caught behind the wheel, a court has heard.

Elaine Marie Nicholas, of Chestnut Way, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified when she appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday, January 15.

Prosecutor Sian Vaughan told the court that police spotted Nicholas, 36, driving a Ford Fiesta along Bush Hill, Pembroke Dock, at around 2pm on October 11.

Nicholas had been banned from driving by Llanelli magistrates in her absence the previous month, and claimed she was unaware of the disqualification because she had moved to a new address.

Mark Layton, defending, said: “She was not in court, she had no idea that she was disqualified from driving when stopped by the officer.”

Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order with 80 hours of unpaid work and banned Nicholas from driving for 18 months.

She was ordered to pay £170 in costs and a surcharge.
