GYMNASTS from Pembrokeshire are jumping for joy after receiving £2,800 towards new equipment from the Milford Mercury.

Pembrokeshire Special Needs Gymnastics Club, which meets every week at the Meads Leisure Centre in Milford Haven, was handed a cheque last week.

The money comes from Gannett – the newspaper’s parent company – and its charitable fund.

The club is currently trying to raise £30,000 for a variety of essential equipment, including inflatable flooring.

Some of the club's gymnasts will be competing in the Special Olympics in Liverpool in 2021, and club secretary Rachel Mathias said the current kit just wasn't up to scratch.

"New flooring will mean we can start hosting other teams," she said.

"The sooner we get it, the sooner our gymnasts can get used to it, and really start getting ready for the Special Olympics."

The club currently relies on using mats, loaned to them by the local judo club.

"We need it to be portable so we can put it out and pack it away after each lesson," said Rachel.

The gymnastics club currently has around 30 members, aged between four and 30.

Asked what the sessions mean to members, Rachel said: "It;s just amazing to see them achieve so much, they love it."

The club has been fundraising for several months and has so far received donations from Milford Haven Town Council, Austwel and Rhyal Engineering.

Coaches have also held raffles, and members collected donations at Tesco Milford Haven.
