A YOUTH organisation based on the traditions and customs of the Royal Navy and other Maritime Services has become the latest winner of the Pride in Pembrokeshire Award.

A spokesman said the Milford Haven Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets won for ‘the intergenerational reach of their work, their strong commitment to volunteering, and their efforts to instil positive values in our young people with the goal of creating better citizens and stronger communities’.

“It is clear that Milford Haven Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets make a substantial contribution to improving the well-being of individuals, and indeed towards the well-being of the County as a whole,” said Tegryn Jones, Chairman of the Public Services Board (PSB).

Led exclusively by adult volunteers, the group teaches young people the values of teamwork, honesty, integrity, self-discipline and loyalty through a broad range of water and land based activities with the aim of building better citizens and better communities.

They meet twice a week in the evenings and also on weekends. They also undertake many training days on school holidays and attend residential courses.

They are based at Haven’s Head Business Park in the Town.

“We’re delighted to win the award,” said Commanding Officer, Lt (SCC) William Elliott.

“Our group makes a difference as we provide an opportunity for the local young people to get off the streets and access a group where they become a part of a team that works hard but also has a lot of fun.”

“We improve their well-being at home and in the Cadets but also in school.

“In fact, Schools have commented that in many cases attendance and behaviour improves as a result of being a Cadet which is great to hear.”
