A PEMBROKE Dock councillor has called for something to be done about a fire-ravaged ‘eyesore’ former hotel at the gateway to the town.

At the end of March, a huge fire broke out at the Cleddau Bridge Hotel, leaving only charred remains, with emergency services from as far afield as Ammanford and Swansea in attendance from the early hours.

At the time, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue group manager David Hancock said: "When we arrived there was a very well-developed fire in the rear of the building on the elevation that faces towards the river.

"It was well-developed on the ground floor and in the roof space. It had obviously been developing for some time."

Mr Hancock of MAWW Fire said a total of seven fire engines had been at the hotel throughout the night, with the initial crews coming from Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven, Tenby and Haverfordwest.

A high-volume water pump was also brought in from Ammanford, a high level engine was called in from Swansea, and another fire crew from Aberystwyth was also called but later stood down.

The former hotel has been empty since owners the Kullar Hotel Group took the decision to close it at the start of 2018.

Pembroke Dock Llanion ward County Councillor Josh Beynon said: “It’s been almost a month now since the fire took place at the former Cleddau Bridge Hotel.

“The site is an eyesore and the cause of the fire is still yet to be determined. It is a shame that the building that was once a hotel around 18 months ago is now in the state it is today.

“I have been asked time and time again what I personally think should happen to the site and I believe the current building should be knocked down and a new hotel should be rebuilt in its place.

“The site sits on a stunning location with a view of the estuary, but also resides in Pembroke Dock thus bringing more people into our town.

“I will be watching the developments as time goes ahead, and I have written to Dyfed-Powys Police asking for an update on the investigation.”
