THE church bells in Hubberston recently tolled for fire-ravaged Notre Dame, sharing sorrow and solidarity.

In response to the Archbishops of Wales, Canterbury and York and following the suggestion of the British Ambassador to France, the Parish Church of St David’s in Hubberston responded to the idea of tolling their church bells on Maundy Thursday, April 18.

The bells tolled at 7pm for seven minutes to show solidarity and sorrow for the recent tragic fire at Notre Dame Cathedral.

Archbishop John Davis said: “The tolling of bells has, for generations, been a sign of mourning for the loss of someone precious and although Notre Dame is a building, there is also a sense in which it is a vital part of the very heartbeat of Paris.”

David Rye took charge of the ancient bell ringing.
