TOP poets from all over Wales and beyond have contributed their work for a poetry trail being set up around Cardigan.

The Poetri Graffiti project has been created by The Cellar Bards, the town’s only regular spoken word event, which is held monthly at The Cellar Bar in Quay Street.

Poets on the graffiti trail include many previous Cellar Bards guests, such as Costa Book Award winner Jonathan Edwards, Menna Elfyn, Dominic Berry, Maggie Harris, Katherine Stansfield, Kathy Miles, Susan Richardson, Helen May Williams and Mike Jenkins.

“This project is about getting poetry out there for the public to see and enjoy. We are spreading the word that poetry is for everyone,” said Cellar Bards co-organiser Jackie Biggs.

“The experience of contemporary poetry is very different from the memory that many people have of having to learn poetry by rote in school.

“Today’s poetry is not stuffed away in dusty books, it’s out there on the streets and on stage as well as on the page and it’s exciting, funny, inspiring, and thought-provoking.”

Cellar Bards MC Dave Urwin said: “There is plenty of variety out there, subjects on the Poetri Graffiti trail so far range from crocodiles, pandas, seahorses, the moon, to seasons, humour and social comment and politics.

“In these times especially we all need to be talking with each other and poetry is growing as a medium of communication, both on the page and as spoken word performance.”

The Poetri Graffiti trail begins and ends at the Caste Café and Cellar Bar in Cardigan, where the Cellar Bards meet.

The poems can be found at many other venues around town – in shop windows, bookshops, cafes, arts venues and there is a good selection of work to read in Welsh and English on the information rack at Cardigan Library.

A Poetri Graffiti trail will also be set up across the Rhosygilwen site over the weekend of the Penfro Book Festival (October 11-13).
