TO celebrate Beethoven’s 250s anniversary, Turner Sims has invited the distinguished British pianist Joanna MacGregor for an online piano extravaganza, which you can enjoy from the comfort of your home.

In three livestreamed concerts on Sunday December 13, Joanna MacGregor will present a personal selection of nine of the composer’s 32 piano sonatas. From the bold early Sonata No 3 dedicated to his teacher Haydn, to the ever-popular Moonlight, and concluding with the monumental and technically challenging final sonata, Beethoven Day spans three decades of the composer’s life. Expect music of great power, intimacy, and vision.

This music-filled day is Turner Sims’ most ambitious online project so far since lockdown. The concert hall has been closed to the public since March but explored new ways of bringing music to its audiences in Southampton and further afield. Watching the livestream is simple: Turner Sims sell tickets on their website, as for regular events, and the audience gets sent a link to the concert a few hours before it starts. The concert can then be enjoyed on a laptop, tablet or smart TV, either live or within the next 7 days.

Concert Hall Manager Kevin Appleby says: "It’s wonderful to be able to bring a performer of the calibre of Joanna MacGregor back to Turner Sims for this special day. She is a wonderful communicator who will bring Beethoven’s music, whether familiar or new to audiences, to life through the screen. The perfect way to enjoy high quality classical music from your seat on the sofa."
