A TEAM of volunteers have been hard at work to help make a Llandeilo park more eco-friendly, thanks to grant funding of more than £6,500.

Llandeilo town council secured the grant from Keep Wales Tidy to make Penlan park a more efficient eco/biodiversity area.

The money was used to purchase items for the project including tools, equipment, wildflower turf, recycled benches and oak sleepers.

Volunteers from clean-up group Ffrindiau Penlan Park Friends, town councillors and local businesses recently came together to get the project off the ground.

The works also include the planting of more than 100 trees.

Llandeilo Mayor, Owen James, has said he hopes to work with local primary schools so the children can help with the planting process.

Earlier this month, the group of Penlan park volunteers worked to clear the leaves from paths to make them safe for walkers.

Group co-founder John Meredith Williams said: "A lot of people using the park on Sunday morning thanked us and and said they would love to join us. Some of the volunteers made it a family day out and brought their children, some of whom really enjoyed their first go at working the leaf blowers."

Councillor Christoph Fischer, a member of the team, said it was an "absolute delight" to work with a committed and fun loving group.

"Even though we had to keep socially distant the atmosphere was great," he said.

Mayor, Owen James said he was amazed by the turn out and the result.

"I personally can’t thank all the volunteers and councillors enough for all their hard work so far," he said.
