ORGANISERS were given only two days from finding out Haverfordwest's chartered fair could take place this year and setting it up.
In a rather peculiar ceremony, the fair was officially opened by the town's mayor, Alan Buckfield, on its penultimate night - the fair runs from October 5 to October 9 before moving to Pembroke.
However there was still time for the town council and its leader to celebrate the fair's arrival and remind people about its historic importance.
"It's a living part of our history with fairs in Haverfordwest going back one thousand years," said mayor Buckfield.
"We are commended by the monarchy to hold the fair. It is a very important part of the town's history and the fabric of the town. Long may it continue."
The mayor also made special mention about the response to the short notice that was given to host the fair.
"The fair men did not know until Friday that they were going to have the fair," continued mayor Buckfield. "So the logistics to get it together is highly commendable."
Member on the committee of the Showman's Guild, Jason Hill, was relieved the show could go ahead however there was a tinge of disappointment in the fact that this year, due to Covid guidelines, no VIP tickets could be issued to schools, meaning there was less of the usual excitable energy of youth running around the fair ground like they have in the past.
