St Davids Volunteer Lifeboat crew has published a checklist for people to ensure their safety after being paged to rescue two people on board a yacht in difficulty.

At 5.30pm on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 9, the team was paged to the yacht which was in difficulty south of Ramsey Island.

The yacht had engine failure, ‘exhausted battling the conditions for a long period of time’ before the crew arrived and gave immediate assistance to the two casualties.

A sea anchor was attached, and the casualties were returned to the station where an ambulance had been called.

The yacht was then towed back to the station as the casualties were treated.

Following the incident, the crew has published a safety checklist for people going out on yachts, which includes:

  • Wear an appropriate lifejacket
  • Carry a means of calling and signalling for help
  • Ensure there is an emergency action plan in place
  • Get the right level of training for your craft
  • Check the weather and tide times
  • Make sure someone ashore knows where you are going and who to call if you don't return on time
  • Drive your boat at a speed that is appropriate to the weather conditions and to the environment you are operating in
