A Sixth Form Bolton alumni member has been selected as a match official for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Emily Carney, a former Mount St Joseph pupil, left The Sixth Form in 2016 with A-levels in physical education, psychology and law.

Whilst studying, Emily played football for the Sixth Form girls’ team and refereed some of the boys’ matches.

In 2020, Emily was promoted to the FIFA list of officials for the first time making her the youngest ever match official to be promoted to this list.

Emily is highly ambitious and has won awards including Female Match Official of the Year in Lancashire 2018, and Young Match Official of the Year in 2017 for the Bolton and Bury League.

In 2020, Emily operated as assistant referee in the Women’s FA Community Shield and operated as Reserve Assistant Referee in the Women’s FA Cup Final progressing onto being the assistant referee at the FA Women’s Cup Final in 2022.

She is also an assistant referee on the Football League 1 and 2.

Emily said she was “humbled and honoured to be selected represent the FA PGMOL in Paris alongside some of the best match officials in the world!”
