HMS Daring, the Royal Navy’s newest and most advanced warship, is to be the new home for two Pembrokeshire airmen.

Milford Haven’s Jamie Morgan, and Thomas Best, from Haverfordwest, will be aboard the type 45 destroyer as it prepares for its first deployment in the summer.

Jamie, aged 21, a former pupil of Milford Haven School, is an air engineering technician (AET), and AET Thomas, aged 23 — who is also the search and rescue winchman — forms part of an eight-strong Lynx helicopter team.

The team, from 815 Naval Air Squadron, based at the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in Somerset, will embark with their aircraft in the £1billion warship.

As the first ‘flight’ to embark in HMS Daring, Jamie and Thomas will be part of the team that will write the rule book for helicopters assigned to other five type 45 destroyers due to join the fleet in the coming years.

Thomas, who attended Sir Thomas Picton School, said: “I am very pleased that I was selected for the flight and to be at the forefront of naval aviation. I’m really looking forward to joining the new ship and be part of the first flight to embark onboard.”

Jamie and Thomas both joined the Royal Navy in the last few years and have recently returned from a deployment to the Caribbean.
