Whitland 47 UWIC 13

Whitland maintained their excellent run of good form as they over-turned an 8-7 deficit near the interval to gain a comfortable home win against the students of UWIC and maintain their interest in promotion.

The Borderers had won narrowly in Cardiff by 21-16 but were far too strong up front for the students after the interval and with the back row of Johnny Koloi, John Bowen and skipper Phil Morgan to the fore they made sure that UWIC were never able to sustain the brand of running rugby that bears their trademark.

Yet the first period was a relatively low-key affair in the Whitland sun as the visitors opened the scoring with a penalty from Rhys Edwards before powerful Whitland prop Romeo Colella barged his way over and outside half Aled Davies added the extras. Edwards missed a second penalty attempt but the students regained the lead when winger Alex Heatley showed a decent turn of speed to reach the corner and claim an unconverted try.

It was the last time they were ahead because just before the oranges the Borderers took the initiative for scrum half Luke Marsh to round off a good move involving forwards and backs.

The homesters' 12-8 interval advantage soon became 26-8 as Koloi and Bowen put lock Raff Williams over for a try and Koloi added another, both converted by No 10 Davies.

The students managed another score as Rhys Edwards regathered his own little grubber kick to cross near the corner, but he was unable to convert and Whitland increased their lead as Bowen and outstanding skipper Morgan were instrumental in setting up the second try for Raff Williams, Davies again adding the extras.

Other tries by centre Eifion Roberts and finally Aled Davies, both converted by Davies to give him a personal haul of 17 points, ensured that Whitland were comfortable victors, with Andrew Jenkins and Lee Glanville also posing a threat from their efforts to cross the gain line.
