THE VOYAGE of a lifetime awaits one lucky Milford Haven sailor when the majestic tall-ship Tenacious arrives in port later this year.

The Tenacious is one of only two tall-ships in the world equipped to allow able-bodied and physically disabled people to sail together, and Milford Haven Town Council has agreed to sponsor one of the disabled berths for the week-long sailing to Southampton.

Deputy mayor Rhys Sinnett explained: "The council is delighted to sponsor the physically disabled berth aboard the Tenacious and are looking to hear from physically disabled people living in the Milford Haven area who would be interested in joining the voyage.

"The details on how we will choose the successful applicant have not yet been finalised but anyone who is interested should write, with their contact details, to the clerk at Milford Haven Town Council, Town Hall, Milford Haven. Letters should be received by Tuesday March 1."

Jenny Brown, chair of the Pembrokeshire Branch of the Jubilee Sailing Trust who are organising the trip, added: "You do not need to have any sailing experience whatsoever and it does not matter what your physical disability is. Tenacious can take up to eight wheelchairs and there will be 20 able-bodied and 20 disabled sailors, we are hoping to fill the ship with local people."

Town mayor Phyllis Williams said: "We are very pleased that the voyage will begin in Milford Haven and we hope that it will bring people into the town.

"But also the council is very pleased to be able to sponsor the berth for someone in the town to sail on Tenacious. We feel that this is the sort of thing the town council is for and should do for the community."

Tenacious will set sail from Milford Haven on May 28 and arrive in Southampton on June 3. The ship will be open to the public on Friday May 27.
