Herbrandston 2 Hakin United 1 HERBRANDSTON pulled off one of the biggest shocks of recent years by dumping Hakin out of the Senior Cup on Saturday.

Goals from Clive Marshallsay and Geraint James were enough to send Herbie through and stopped Hakin reaching their sixth successive final. Jamie Boswell's Herbie side played out of their skins and never let the cup holders settle.

The first goal came within 20 minutes. It was Marshallsay whose cross shot beat Hakin keeper Martin Langdon, hit the post and bounced in. That was no more than Herbie deserved and they almost doubled their advantage shortly after.

It was Marshallsay again who caused the problems in the Hakin rearguard but this time his strike at goal was cleared off the line. Despite Hakin coming more into the game, the home side went into the break a goal to the good.

A single goal was never going to be enough to win this tough local derby and it was Herbie who scored the crucial second.

Matthew Price chased what looked to be a lost cause and reached the ball just before it went dead. His pass fell at the feet of Geraint James who made no mistake, beating Langdon with a neat near-post finish.

At 2-0 Herbie looked comfortable but Hakin are made of stern stuff and they gave the home team something to think about with just three minutes left on the clock.

Adam Collins' cross was met by Kristan Bennett. He nodded into the path of Paul 'Jonah' Jones who pounced from six yards to set up an interesting finish.

But it wasn't to be for the champions as Herbie held firm as referee Steve Evans blew the final whistle for a famous victory that blows this year's Senior Cup wide open.

A delighted Boswell said: "The boys gave 150%, Carlo Giannuzzi was man of the match."

While Vikings manager Chris Tansey's reacted by saying: "I'm naturally bitterly disappointed. This result means that we'll be moving onto better things."
