A woman who was arrested for possessing amphetamine uses the drug “to stay awake on a night out”, according to her lawyer.

Samantha Edwards pleaded guilty to the charge at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan said police executed a search warrant at the defendant’s home in Stranraer Road, Pennar, on July 15.

“When she saw police, she hid something behind her back,” said Ms Morgan. “A package was seized and found to contain 36.34g of amphetamine, worth about £250.”

During a police interview, Edwards, aged 29, admitted the drugs were for personal use, but said she paid £60 for what she believed was just 14g of amphetamine.

Defending, James Subbiani said his client was “completely perplexed” at the amount that was found on her.

“She is not a frequent user. She uses the drug to stay awake on a night out.

“She has an eight-year-old daughter and doesn’t go out much, so when she does, she likes to let her hair down.”

Mr Subbiani added Edwards was sorry and had been “petrified” about going to court.

Edwards was given an 18-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs.

A destruction order was also made for the drugs.
