The Aldi middle aisle is the stuff of dreams. You enter the store determined to leave with just the groceries you need, but somehow depart with new gardening tools, a yoga mat and an air fryer.

The middle aisle has long established itself as the pinnacle of the Aldi shop, wowing us every week with what is in stock.

The twice weekly “once they’re gone they’re gone” products, also known as Aldi Specialbuys, are what make the store so great.

And to solidify the middle aisle’s iconic status, the supermarket is applying for ‘Specialbuys’ to appear in the new Oxford English Dictionary.

Latest stats from Aldi reveal the best-selling Specialbuys across the UK include anyting from inflatable Spa Pools in Birmingham, Kamado BBQs in Bury and Caravan Toilet Fluid in Chelmsford, Essex.

Since 2008 – when the middle aisle was first introduced to the UK – an army of Specialbuyers has grown.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “Specialbuys have taken on a life of their own over the last 13 years – they’re beloved by shoppers and even have pages dedicated to them on social media!

“From garden furniture to pet gear, and kayaks to spa pools, the Specialbuys concept of amazing value products that you didn’t know you needed until you came across them has struck a chord with the British public. Being able to buy them online has also helped to boost their must-have status. The term Specialbuys is now part of the UK retail landscape, and we think it deserves official recognition in the Oxford English Dictionary.”

Current products in Aldi’s Specialbuys include: an Ambiano Glass Kettle for £19.99, an Ambiano Vacuum Food Sealer for £19.99 and a Wooden Maracas Percussion Set for £8.99.
