A STACKPOLE man has said he was slashed to the face during a terrifying suspected car-jacking attempt at Freshwater West on Friday.

Wayne Edge’s car was brought to a halt by a man suddenly appearing in the road.

Chillingly, the driver’s side window of his car was then smashed, and a grab made for the keys.

As he struggled, his face was slashed.

Wayne had been driving his car through Freshwater West towards Angle in the rain on Friday evening, November 30, between 5.30 and 6pm, when his car was stopped by a man suddenly appearing on the road.

Wayne described the run-up to his terrifying ordeal: “I went past the main car park, it was pouring down with rain, passing a black car with lights on, which I thought was a bit strange at the time.

“On the top of that road there’s a new cottage; about 200 metres before the junction is where the incident happened.

“Someone stepped in to the road; I stopped the car.”

Wayne believes more than one man was on the scene at the time.

“I was looking at the person as I stopped.

“As soon as I stopped, the driver’s-side window was smashed, I leaned out of the way towards the passenger side; a hand entered the car to grab the car keys; I grabbed his hand.

“He yanked my hand and I felt a sharp pain, he cut my face, he cut from the middle of my cheek to my lip.

“I immediately put my foot down and drove off.

“I called 999 as soon as I left; the lady I was talking to told me to carry on to the police station; an ambulance was waiting for me when I got there.

“It was quite a big gash; it’s all stitched up now.”

Since then, Wayne has been back to the scene with police investigators.

He added: “I still don’t know how I feel at the moment; I’m just glad it didn’t happen to a young person with kids in the car, or an elderly person. I think if they’d got the keys then maybe I wouldn’t be here today.

“It seemed they wanted the car, they went straight for the keys.”

He hoped raising details of his ordeal would serve as a warning.

“I don’t want sympathy; I just don’t want anyone else going down there alone. If they tried doing it to me, they may do it to other people.

“I don’t know if I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I don’t want it happening to anyone else.”

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said: “Dyfed-Powys Police is investigating an assault which is reported to have taken place as a man was driving along the B4219 Freshwater West towards the B4320 Angle to Pembroke Road.

“The victim reports approaching the junction, when a man stood in the road and caused him to stop, before a second man approached the vehicle and smashed the driver’s window.

“The victim sustained a laceration to his cheek during the incident.

“All available police resources were directed to the area and an extensive search was carried out, but no offenders were traced.

“Officers have carried out anniversary checks in the area over the following days, speaking to drivers who might have been on the road around the time of the incident.

“Residents are likely to see a higher than usual police presence in the area over the coming days as officers carry out additional enquiries.

“Anyone who was driving along this road at around 5.40pm – especially any drivers who might have dash cam footage – is asked to contact Dyfed-Powys Police by calling 101 and quoting reference 255 of November 30.”
