AS HAVERFORDWEST was decked with Christmas lights last week, the town crier rose to new heights for a festive announcement.
David Rye, the common crier, took his place in a cherry picker outside St Mary's Church, High Street, announcing the church's Yuletide fair and helping to decorate a Christmas tree.
Former Western Telegraph reporter Derek Rees reported from the scene in verse:
Town Mayor's Crier David Rye made a recent announcement from the sky,
To advertise St Mary's Christmas Fayre, from the bucket of a cherry picker up in the air.
With kind permission from Sue Murray, Mayor, it was David's third "cry" for the Christmas Fayre,
With a peal from the church's belfry crew, he went aloft his spiel to do.
Announcing a varied range of stands arranged by a team with busy hands,
Displaying craft, produce and gifts for the kids, - and a silent auction with written bids.
Thanks to his aerial 'Oyez' address, the two-day event proved a great success,
The proceeds will go to support and uphold an iconic building eight centuries old.
