A COMMUNITY art competition has embellished the halls of the new Ysgol Bro Gwaun building with works of art by esteemed local artists.

The competition was open to everyone with the winners lending their art to the school for a three-year period in return for a £100 prize.

It attracted entries from established and amateur artists as well as local children who all submitted pieces on the theme Land, Sea, Sky.

The work will be on show to inspire pupils and adorn the new build school over the three-year period.

"There was a very high standard of entry," said organiser Helen Manley Jones of The Gallery, Newport. "The judges took a morning to fill out their marking sheets. All of the judges were amazed at the work that was entered. It was a challenge for them [to choose their favourites] they really had to work for their tea and biscuits."

Judges marked each piece for six separate criteria, with each of these being awarded five marks. The anonymously-submitted artworks wit the highest overall marks were chosen as the winners.

Six winners were announced last Friday evening, December 7, and the judges were so impressed they also announced six highly commended pieces.

The winning six artworks will be on show for three years, and the highly commended work will also go on the walls for one year.

"We are delighted with the outcome," said Helen. "And hope we can run the competition again in the future."
