PEMBROKESHIRE'S MPs have have said they intend to support the Theresa May staying as leader of the conservative party.

Stephen Crabb and Simon Hart have both stated their intention to support the Prime Minister in a confidence vote tonight.

The vote was triggered after 48 conservative MPs registered their disapproval with a committee of tory MPs.

In a statement to the Western Telegraph, Preseli Pembrokeshire MP Stephen Crabb threw his weight behind the PM, calling the vote “reckless”.

He said: “I feel angry that a group of my colleagues are forcing this confidence vote today.

“Trying to ditch the Prime Minister at this serious moment is a reckless and self-indulgent move which does nothing to make Brexit any easier.

“MPs need to think about the national interest not which version of Brexit they think best suits them. I will support Theresa May in the vote tonight.”

South Pembrokeshire MP Simon Hart also sated his intention to support Theresa May, calling the vote an “act of folly”.

In an interview with ITV, Mr Hart said: “I’m bewildered, slightly angry, it’s a distraction from what we should be doing, and I think judging from my email inbox quite a lot of people in west Wales are of the same view.

“I support the Prime minister, not necessarily because I’m personally friends with Theresa May, but because I think toppling the Prime Minister at this stage in the most complicated negotiations we’ve had for goodness know how many years is an act of folly.

“It is damaging to the UK and it is damaging to Wales.”

If the PM gets the required support, she cannot be challenged by the committee again for one year.

However, if Mrs May doesn’t get the necessary votes she will be forced to stand aside, and a conservative leadership contest will be held.
