A GLAMOROUS gran who played in a rock and roll band, learned to drive in her 60s, and attended a royal coronation, turned 100 this week.

Nesta Elizabeth Bradshaw celebrated the milestone birthday with her family in Neyland on Monday (January 14).

Dressed in a gorgeous pink outfit, with co-ordinating nails and pearl jewellery, Nesta still looked the picture of glamour as she greeted family, friends and neighbours.

"She's always looked after herself, she likes everything to match," said Sandra.

"Mum says she has had a very happy, easy and long life and has nothing to complain about.

"She enjoys having a laugh, is very mischievous, fun-loving, outgoing and determined."

Born in Pembroke, Nesta attended Pembroke Dock County School, before going into service with the Marquis and Marchioness of Exeter at Burghley House in Stamford.

She remained with the family for four years, attending the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) in 1937.

Nesta joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) in 1939, and went into the nursing division.

It was here she met her future husband Douglas, an injured RAF sergeant.

"I looked after him and when he was better he took me out to dinner and that was it," she said.

The couple had two children, followed by two grandchildren.

Douglas died in 1993, and Nesta continued to live independently until she was 96, when she came to live with her daughter Sandra Sweeny in Neyland.

Still an avid knitter, Nesta has enjoyed many hobbies, which over the years have included gardening, walking, crochet and sewing.

She was also a member of the Mothers Union and the local amateur dramatic society, and produced numerous plays and pantomimes.

A talented pianist, in the early 1960s she formed a musical trio and played a various social functions.

She also became the organist for St Michaels Church.

"Mum has always said she was playing rock and roll on a Saturday night and hymns on a Sunday morning," said Sandra.

A card from the Queen, congratulating Nesta on her 100th birthday, arrive in time for her celebrations.
