WELSH rugby stars will be taking on some traditional fuel on Saturday (March 2) when they join the crowds enjoying cawl in Saundersfoot.

Leigh Halfpenny, Alun Wyn Jones and Ken Owens are on a short break from Six Nations duty before the Welsh campaign continues the following week.

The trio will be in the village to play a winning role in the village's Cawl by the Sea event, which is being organised by Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism.

They will be sampling cawl at seven different eating establishments in the village, who will be serving up gallons of the tasty delicacy from their own special recipes between noon and 2.30pm.

The players will then present the prizes to the overall winners of the Cawl Cooking Championship of the World....and Elsewhere; which is decided by the public vote.

They will also be making the Captain's Choice award to their favourite dish, while Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism chairman, Phil Odley, and county councillor Phil Baker will be naming the Chairman's Choice.

Commemorative cawl bowls will be on sale at the Regency Hall from 11am.

Reigning cawl champions, The Boat House, will be up against challenges from the Regency Hall; Marina Fish, Chips & More; Beachside Barbecue; Harbwr Bar and Kitchen; the Captain's Table and Periwinkle Tearoom & Pottery.

The day also features a free dragon trail, a showcase of village organisations, Welsh afternoon teas, a draw for a signed Welsh rugby shirt and live music, including the evening's concert by the South Wales Gay Men's Chorus and Bella Voce.

Tickets for the concert are £10, and are available in Saundersfoot at Little and Large Lite Bites or the Regency Hall, and via Anne on 07951 578550.
