POUNDLAND's Milford Haven store will be divided into three vacant units when the national retailer closes down later this month.

The shop at the Havens Head Retail Park is set to close its doors for the last time on Saturday, April 20, after Poundland was unable to come to new terms for renting the shop.

A spokesman for Poundland said the company was unable to renegotiate a new rental agreement with its landlord. the Port of Milford Haven Authority.

“We’re as disappointed as our colleagues and shoppers,” said the spokesman.

“We’d love to return in the future, but landlords have to recognise that rent and service charges can’t be at levels that make our operation uneconomic.

“We will, of course, do our best to find roles for the colleagues who work in the store. In the meantime, our nearest store will be at Haverfordwest,” they added.

When Poundland leaves the business park, the Port of Milford Haven Authority plans to sub-divide the unit into three smaller shops, as it believes this will have a "broader appeal" to businesses.

According to the Port, one of these proposed units has been let already.

A spokesman for the Port said: “We are disappointed that Poundland will not be renewing their lease at Havens Head Business Park.

"While we appreciate that trading conditions may be challenging, it is always regrettable when any business chooses to relocate, not least for the impact this has on local staff and customers."

The Port of Milford Haven bought Haven's Head Retail Park in 2017.

At the time the Port said buying the business park was an important part of its diversification strategy.

The Port spokesman added: "The strategy is working. We recently invested in the development of a Costa Drive-Thru."

"This has already resulted in the employment of six local, young people who had received tailored training to assist them into employment from the ‘Routes to Opportunity Plus’ project, a vocational training project co-facilitated by Milford Youth Matters and Pembrokeshire Youth Services.”

Poundland is holding a closing down sale up until it closes.
