JUST a few days after the cricket had finally started up - after being cancelled last year due to coronavirus pandemic - the second round of matches had to be called off on Monday due to the wet and windy conditions.

Weather was the only winner as fixtures across all five divisions of the Pembroke County League were beaten by the Bank Holiday downpour.

It had been a bumper start to the campaign on Saturday, with a full roster of league fixtures being played, after the 2020 league season was cancelled.

In division one, defending champions Neyland got off to a flying start against newly promoted Llechryd, winning by 182 runs, with Nick Kooman the star of the show with his magnificent 127 not out.

2019 runners-up Lawrenny sit top of the initial league standings after notching a 189 run win over Whitland, with Ryan Morton taking an emphatic 4 for 17.

Possibly the bowler of the round was Haverfordwest's Will Phillips, who returned 4 for 15, in their 104-run win over Narberth on the opening day.

Tipped to be Neyland's main challengers this season, Carew and Cresselly also got off to winning starts at the weekend.

Meanwhile in division two, Pembroke and Pembroke Dock led the way, both scoring over 250 runs in big victories over Hook and Burton respectively.

Division two also produced some terrific batting stats at the weekend, with Johnathan Rogers making 152 for Pembroke, whilst Richard Cope made 150 not out for Kilgetty.

The next round of fixtures is scheduled for Saturday, May 8, where the teams will be hoping for more favourable weather conditions.
