Welsh League, Division 1: Cambrian & Clydach 2-1 Haverfordwest County

After a good first half at the Cambrian fortress, the Blues were forced to surrender a 1-0 lead in the dying stages and were left ruing a number of earlier misses as Cambrian scored in the 85th and 96th minutes, writes Robert Nisbet.

The Blues took the lead in the 11th minute with a lovely curling 20-yard shot from Lee Trundle.

They continued to get the better of the first half exchanges with Sean Pemberton and Alaric Jones outstanding in defence, and Ricky Watts winning almost everything in midfield and Ben Fawcett very enterprising up front.

But Cambrian, who have recently been involved in re-shaping their side with local talent and are maybe a year ahead of the Blues along that road, were always going to be a tough nut to crack.

Fawcett, Trundle and Danny Williams all missed good chances for the Blues but although the Cambrian keeper had a much busier afternoon that Steve Hall.

Nevertheless the lead stayed intact until the very end of the game when Cambrian equalised with an 85th minute David Thomas penalty.

Cambrian’s final throw was to bring on the towering 6’4” hit-man Craig Hughes and in the 6th minute of injury time he rose above the visitors’ defence to nod the ball down to the left foot of Mikey Jones who hooked a volley into the top corner.

Haverfordwest will look to bounce back tomorrow night when they host Goytre United in the second round of the League Cup, 7.45pm kick off.
