REIGNING MSA Junior Rallycross champion Tom Llewellin ended his season in fine style by taking victory in the final round of the 2018 Swift Sport Championship at Silverstone at the weekend.

The 17-year-old from Haverfordwest was battling for runner-up spot in the series after losing out on the title at the previous round and was once again driving for Peter Gwynne Motorsport (PGM) in the Suzuki Swift.

The day started off with third place in the opening heat from the back row of the grid which he followed up with second place in heat two. Things didn’t go as planned in his third heat, however, when a clash with another competitor saw the car sustain damage to the steering but he’d done enough to qualify for the semi-final.

Second place in that race put him on the second row for the all-important final whereby with the help of an early ‘joker’ lap, he took the lead and was never headed as he took a brilliant victory which cemented his second place in the series in his debut season.

Prior to Silverstone on the Saturday, the teenager was in action in a Ford Escort Mk 2 at Builth Wells for the Builth Stages Rally where he finished second in class on the slippery event organised by Herefordshire Motor Club.

Afterwards, Llewellin said: “I had a very busy weekend which started in an historic MK 2 Ford Escort at the Builth Stages Rally where I finished in a very pleasing second in class in slippery conditions, It meant I had to learn the art of rear wheel drive before moving onto the final round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship at Silverstone.

"I had a good run through practice getting back used to the front wheels driving and was happy with third in heat one from the back of the grid and then went on to get second in heat two. The third heat didn’t go so well but in the semi-finals I managed to climb up to second to be on the second row for the final.

"I had a good start and decided to take an early joker and had some clean air to get my head down and get some good laps in which brought me out in front, which I maintained to give me the win.

"Thanks to Peter, Sarah and the whole PGM team and my family and sponsors for a fantastic season.”
