Volunteers from Pembrokeshire Weightlifting and staff from Weightlifting Wales organised a fantastic event on Saturday at the STP Sports Centre.

There was overwhelming support from clubs across Wales, with many travelling long distances to support, officiate and compete at the event.

The competition featured 75 athletes competing in seven groups. All of the lifters were ranked on their best lifts and placed into groups of similar ability, no body weight categories were used and this really kept the lifting groups exciting to watch.

For some athletes, this was their first attempt at a weightlifting competition, and they were fully supported by personal club coaches and a large and supportive crowd. Other athletes gained qualification totals for events includin: Welsh Senior National Championships; British Seniors National Championships; British Age group National events; British University Championships.

Some lifters managed to qualify for European and World Master Championships and some worked closer to reaching GB qualification totals for European Youth and Junior Championships.

"Pembrokeshire had 21 lifters competing, and although a few more entered some came down with the flu," said SAW director Simon Roach.

"For some it was just a good experience as it was their first or second competition - performing extremely well and gaining personal bests.

"Many are still new to the sport and working on refining technique, competition experience and learning to cope with a large number of spectators."
