Former Ysgol Y Preseli pupil Sion Bennett is back on home soil after helping the Wales 7s team achieve their best HSBC World Series tournament display of the season down under.

The 25-year-old returned to the  squad for the Hamilton and Sydney legs of the tournament.

The first weekend in New Zealand didn't go well, with Richie Pugh's team losing all five games against Fiji, Australia, Argentina, Spain, and France.

But flanker Bennett, who came through the ranks at Narberth and has been with the Blues since April 2017, then played a key role as Wales bounced back in Australia.

After pushing eventual tournament winners New Zealand before losing 27-14, Wales beat Scotland 26-12.

A 21-5 loss to Spain meant Pugh's men started day two in the Challenge Trophy, and beat Kenya 19-14 in their quarter final before an agonising 19-17 loss to Japan in the final four.

"It was a tough weekend in New Zealand but a massive learning curve for some of the younger boys," Bennett told Telegraph Sport.

"And we really built on that in Sydney and got some good results earning the best finish for the team all season.

"Hopefully the team can keep a similar group of players and continue to develop in to the next few tournaments."

The next series leg is in Las Vegas from March 1st-3rd.
