Finally, it's official.

Former Greenhill pupil Bruce Tasker has become the first ever Welsh athlete to win an Olympic medal five years after he, John Jackson, Joel Fearon and Stuart Benson seemingly finished fifth at the Sochi 2014 Games.

But in December 2017 it emerged that the two Russian crews that finished in front of the Team GB four man Bobsleigh squad had been provisionally disqualified for doping offences.

This followed the release of the now infamous McLaren report published in July 2016, a 97-page document that presented insurmountable evidence linking Russian athletes, in a range of sports, to state-sponsored doping.

And today the British Olympic Association (BOA) has confirmed their quartet had finally been officially upgraded to bronze.

Telegraph Sport contacted Tasker, who retired last October due to health issues, and the former Pembrokeshire man admitted he feared this day would never come.

"We've heard the same thing over and over again but it was all unofficial. My initial thought was this was more of the same," he admitted.

"So to have it officially ratified is just tremendous."

How and when the presentations will take place is yet to be confirmed, but the 31-year-old said he wasn't going to wait any longer than needed.

"The four of us will have discussions today as I believe we have some choice to how things happen. There had been a suggestion of a presentation at the next Winter Olympics in 2022 - but having wasted five years already I don't fancy another three!

"Obviously we were denied the occasion in Russia but that can be turned into a positive. Now we can celebrate with the wider team and our friends and family who couldn't make it to Sochi."

It is the icing on the cake for Tasker who had previously said the fifth placed finish at the Games was one of his proudest achievements.

"For me it was all about the journey the four of us went on, including the build up to Sochi.

"We proved ourselves against all of the odds and I'm still so proud to have been part of it."
