Division 2: Hakin United 2nds 0-1 Fishguard Sports

A late penalty from Niall Kinsella moved Fishguard Sports within one point of the Division Two title as they edged past Hakin 2nds at The Obs.

With time running out after a tight contest, the centre back made no mistake from the spot after Matt Harries had been tripped in the area by Jonathan Fawcett.

The Vikings went in as the only Division Two side to beat Fishguard this season, and the visitors lost the influential Steve Lewis early on after an accidental collision with home keeper Leigh Broome.

Hakin started brightly but it was Fishguard who first went close when home keeper Leigh Broome did brilliantly to tip over Ieuan Llewellyn’s effort.

Matt Harries also headed against the post while at the other end, Adrian Devonald blasted over from inside the area and away keeper Dean Hopson made two smart saves to keep things at 0-0.

It was a case of defences on top in the second half though and both sides seemed largely untroubled at the back until the last five minutes, when Harries went down under Fawcett’s tackle and referee Roy Boswell pointed to the spot.

Broome did get a hand to Kinsella’s penalty but it found the net to seal a crucial win.

The Sports have three games left but their goal difference essentially guarantees them the title already - and Brian Kinsella’s team will be officially crowned champions on Saturday if they get a draw or better at The Racecourse against second placed Merlins Bridge 2nds.
