When Alfie Howells sat down to watch the Mighty Ducks DVD two years ago, he never realised the impact it was about to have on him.

But after thoroughly enjoying the film, the now 12-year-old was determined to get into ice hockey. So a few weeks later he travelled up to watch the Cardiff Devils play a UK Elitle League match and decided he had to take the sport up for himself.

Of course, there is little scope for ice hockey in Pembrokeshire, so instead the youngster from Stop and Call, Goodwick, had to look at joining one of the junior sides at the Devils.

He had to learn to skate first and underwent a course in stick handling, but took to it well and after training and trials, is now playing for one of the club's under 13 sides.

He now travels to the capital to train twice a week, and with Cardiff being the only side in Wales, the defender spends a lot of time on the road with away matches all in England.

"It means long weekends and in June he's going to Sheffield for a two day tournament," said mum Samantha.

"But he loves it and has ambitions to play for the Devils when he's older."
