MCC (210 all out) v Pembroke County Cricket Club (19-0) – match abandoned

It was well poised at Kilgetty as the Pembroke County Cricket Club set about chasing down the MCC’s total of 210 - only for rain to then ruin matters.

The hosts were 19-0 when the heavy showers, that had persisted both before and during the tea break, returned meaning Sean Hannon’s side were forced to end their final game of the summer prematurely.

Until then the clash had made enthralling viewing with the MCC falling to 11-2 early on, Tom Davies having Harry Bowles (0) caught in the slips first over by Ross Hardy, before Harry Rogers also edged to the Neyland man off Ryan Morton.

Alex Jones also went cheaply, clean bowled by the in-form Davies, but opener Barry Humpage and Joe Royce (14) took the score to 72 before the latter was lbw to Morgan Scale’s first ball.

But that only brought in Adam Keane, and the No 6 turned the tide from there, despite regularly losing partners with Humpage going for 44 (six fours and a six) when he was stumped by Hannon off Scale.

Wickets kept falling as Scott Thomas was run out and Ross Hardy came on to have Robbie Crawford (16) and Chris Thorne (2) caught by Hannon and Dan Sutton respectively – while Jack Davies (16) holed out to Ashley Sutton off Simon Holliday.

But with the score on 190-9 after 48 overs, 20 then came from Brad McDermott-Jenkins in the 49th, with Keane cracking a six and three fours to move to 87 off 70 balls, with 56 of those runs coming in boundaries.

With a century in sight though, Keane tries to go big again off Holliday from the first ball of the last over and could only pick out Ashley Sutton in the field.

By that point rain was falling and it got heavier during the tea interval, during which County Club Chairman Paul Webb spoke to welcome the visitors to Pembrokeshire, and he and MCC captain Paul Rees exchanged mementoes. A special presentation of a county cap was also made to Simon Holliday in recognition of his contribution to the team and Pembrokeshire cricket this past decade.

It was the latter and Dan Sutton who did manage to get the PCCC reply going but after reaching 19-0, the rain returned and this time heavily, meaning an early finish to what was shaping up to be a very good contest.
