JD Cymru South:

Haverfordwest County 5

Afan Lido 1

Haverfordwest County returned to winning ways sealing an emphatic five-goal victory against Afan Lido at the Bridge Meadow on Friday night under lights.

Tom Dyson, Marcus Griffiths, Kieran Rees, Jack Wilson and Tim Hicks grabbed the crucial goals for the on-song Bluebirds.

Bluebirds boss Wayne Jones who was bitterly disappointed his team narrowly lost 1-0 at Undy Athletic last time out, but this time with players back from injury they were more ruthless in front of goal.

Bluebirds skipper Sean Pemberton was missing after the centre back up picked an ankle injury last week, plus right-wing back Miles John still isn’t fit.

But there was some positive news for manager Jones as Ben Fawcett returned to the starting line-up, also Marcus Griffiths was back, so The Bluebirds were at full strength up front – and this certainly made a big difference.

Tom Dyson opened the scoring with a sweetly struck 12-yard half volley, Griffiths’ cross from the right was met by a firm header from Fawcett which crashed off the crossbar, and Dyson followed up with a sharp finish.

Bradley Fray fired a low show shot wide; Stephen Morris nodded just past the post at a corner as Lido tried to get back on level terms.

Lido keeper Steve Can pulled off a smart stop to deny Wilson’s shot cum cross from the right.

Man of the match and skipper Ricky Watts assisted with his side’s second, the all action midfielder lobbed Cann from the edge of the box and Griffiths finished from close range to chalk up his seventh goal of the season.

On the stoke of half time the visitors pulled one back, Alex Gammond powerfully heading home unmarked at a corner.

Shortly after the interval and former Bluebird Kaid Mohamed forced a good save from Steve Hall.

Minutes later and the hosts added their third. Fawcett made good ground down the right, his dangerous cross from the right fell kindly to Rees who drilled his shot in the far corner, this was his first league goal for the club.

Nicky Palmer replaced goal scorer Dyson on the hour mark and within five minutes they added goal number four. Watts’ long ball quickly turned defence into attack, Wilson controlled with his head and showed good composure as he struck a wicked volley crashing into the back of the net.

On the stroke of full time the hosts grabbed a fifth, Tim Hicks finished off a flowing move from close range, Rees’ intelligent ball out wide found Wilson and his pinpoint low cross fell to the assistant manager who swept home from inside the six-yard box.

Up next for Haverfordwest County is Cambrian & Clydach away on Saturday, 21st September, this will be a tough test for The Bluebirds.
