Josh Whatling was one of the star performers for Milford Haven Karate Club in their Welsh League meeting in Merthyr Tydfil.

He won a gold medal in a difficult Over 75 kilograms category, to go with the silver medal he claimed the Under 18s category where he narrowly missed out in a quality final.

Gethin Adams also fought consistently to gain a valuable bronze medal, pushing him into the top three overall going into the final league event in March.

“I’m so proud of the guys,” Milford haven head coach Kevin John told Telegraph Sport.

“Josh won a hard 75 kilogram plus event and that’s the first time the club has taken gold there for a number of years.

“He also lost a close final in the under 18s but all of his hard work is finally paying off and the results show that. He will use this experience for the big events that we have planned for 2020, with the potential to be part of the Karate Wales squad that’s fighting in Poland in July.

“Gethin Adams also fought superbly to gain a hard bronze in the under 12s, narrowly losing by a single point.

“But everyone performed well and for a small squad we are doing something right.”
