If you’ve played against Herbrandston anytime in the last 20 years you would have come across Andy Williams.

A great club man down in the ‘village’, Andy continues to prepare the pitch, run the line, help with the running of the senior sides and volunteer in numerous other ways. And there’s not much in the last couple of decades he hasn’t seen.

“I’ve gone for a squad of 16 because you didn’t specify if it was a West Wales Cup game or not,” he told Telegraph Sport.

“And I’ve picked myself as linesman.”

Herbie now play in Division 2 but under Sean Thomas, are showing signs of recovery. And they’ve enjoyed some good times in the last 20 years, including a Senior Cup final appearance in 2008 when they were narrowly beaten by Monkton in 2008.

And it’s the players in the XI that day who dominate this line up.

GOALKEEPER – MARTIN LANGDON

Simply put, a very good all round keeper and still is now. Extremely reliable and you felt safe when he was in goal for you.

RIGHT BACK – ADAM GALDO

Just your no nonsense full back. Would mark his man, win the ball, and then make a simple pass. Very consistent performer.

CENTRE BACK – DANIEL MUNN

One word – aerial. Will put his head anywhere and great at set pieces whether it be defending or attacking.

CENTRE BACK – CARLO GIANNUZZI

Another no nonsense player who was a real enforcer at the back for Herbie. He could play as well with the ball at his feet but his style was direct. If a man was in the way he’s soon go through him!

LEFT BACK – LEIGH MARCHANT

Back at the club now and a left back who likes to get forward and good in attack when he does. Knows when to time his runs out of defence and an experienced player.

RIGHT MIDFIELD – MARC GELONA

Great pace, especially in his younger years and drives forward really well. Also handy from outside the box – has a decent shot on him.

CENTRE MIDFIELD – MATTHEW PRICE

Would also be my captain. In fact, we’ve not had a leader like him since. Great engine and would give you 100% and a good footballer as well. So badly missed by everyone.

CENTRE MIDFIELD – NICO GIANNUZZI

Nico was a midfield general. He could control play and dictate the pace at which we played. Very assured performer.

LEFT MIDFIELD – MARK JONES

I genuinely think any team in the county would pick him if he was available. A great left foot and comfortable in so many positions.

STRIKER – AJ GALDO

How can I put this? Anywhere on the park he would be outstanding. Could play defence, midfield, and in his favoured position as striker he knew where the goal was. Great pace and scored so many goals for Herbie.

STRIKER – NICKY WOODROW

The name says it all. His goals were vital in getting us to the 2007 Senior Cup final and he was, and still is, and out and out finisher. Another player who would get in any other Pembrokeshire side.

SUBSTITUTES

SCOTT REID

Another great goal scorer for us who is unlucky not to start. And I’d also have him on the bench as back up keeper too!

DANIEL ARMSTRONG

Like Munny, good at the set piece and a solid centre back. Came through the juniors with Steve Batty and developed into a very good footballer who later won league titles with Hakin.

MIKE TURPIN

A really skilful midfielder who always looked fancy on the ball. Great delivery from set pieces too.

SHANE WALSH

Reason I’ve picked him is for his out and out work rate. You would always get a 90 minute performance with Shane, even if you were 4-0 or 5-0 down. He wanted to win games and went to the final whistle.

ADRIAN REES

One word sums Reeso up – commitment. Will put his body in the way of anything at centre back and as filled in as keeper for us in the last few years too. Been a Herbie boy from juniors and never even looked at another club.

MANAGER – STEVE BATTY

Played his early football with the likes of Camrose but came to Herbie and became manager, and has gone onto bigger things with his coaching now. Led us to the Senior cup final but people forget also had us competing at the top of what was a very difficult Division 1 league at the time. I’m not going to give him an assistant, he wouldn’t need one with the talent he has here!
