St Davids will host the European premiere of Chris Malloy’s latest surf movie, 180° South: Conquerors of the Useless, on Saturday.
Malloy’s eclectic travelogue follows Jeff Johnson as he retraces the epic1968 journey of Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins to what was and to some extent still is the back of beyond – Patagonia.
Along the way he gets shipwrecked off Easter Island, surfs the longest wave of his life in Chile and prepares for a rare ascent of the rugged Patagonian peaks Cerro Corcovado.
Jeff also meets up with Chouinard and Tompkins in a rainy mountain hut and finds that while the pair were once driven purely by a love of climbing and surfing, they now value the experience of raw nature – and have come to Patagonia to spend their fortunes to protect it.
A combination of surf film, climbing adventure and eco documentary, 180° South is both absorbing and inspiring.
The film will be shown at The Refectory, St David’s Cathedral, and the event is sponsored by Patagonia Europe. It starts at 7pm. Tickets are limited to 100 on a first come, first served basis, available from TyF Adventure, 1 High Street, St Davids, or by emailing Ross Beece at toesoverross@hotmail.co.uk. Tickets are £5.
