Race against the clock for cancer charity

FIVE men, 24 hours behind the wheel, but only one CD player – that’s the challenge for members of Milford Haven Round Table as they aim to drive through five countries in a day to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

Setting off from Milford Haven on Friday, March 28, the group will take turns to drive a specially sign- written Skoda Superb through England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, crossing the finish line in Ireland the next day.

A grand finale to a year of fundraising, Round Table chairman Ralph Rees hopes the ‘five nations challenge’ will clock up some extra cash for cancer charity Prostate Cymru.

So far, more than £8,000 has been raised for the Welsh charity, which promotes awareness of male cancer.

Ralph will be joined by current president Paul Phillips, past chairman Alex Bower, life honorary member Glyn Edwards, and next year’s chairman Dan Davies.

“This is an exciting venture and challenge for us, and a fantastic way to not only end my year as chairman but more importantly to raise money for such a worthwhile cause, which will benefit many people in west and south Wales,” said Ralph, adding that the biggest challenge may be deciding who picks the music for their epic trip.

Ralph said that, until recently, he hadn’t realised that men as young as 45 were at risk of developing prostate cancer.

He added that, through fundraising for Prostate Cymru, he and other Round Table members had learnt a lot about the disease, and the importance of getting checked out, whatever age.

“If you catch it in time, it’s curable,” he said.

Prostate Cymru is also trying to raise £1.65million for state-of-the-art robotic surgery equipment for Wales, which would lower the risk of complications and improve recovery times for patients.

At present, if patients choose to have ‘robotic’ surgery, they have to travel to England and pay to it.

“It’s wrong that there is currently no opportunity for men to have this treatment in Wales,” said Ralph.
