CHILDREN at Milford Haven's Meads School can now make the most of play time, whatever the weather, thank to donations from the community.

Costing £15,500, the colourful new all-weather play area features a pirate ship, rope walks, balance beams, chalk and activity board, stepping stones and log walk.

It was paid for by the school, fundraising by the parents and friends association, and donations from Valero, Pembroke Power Station, Van Dyk's hairdressers, and Tesco Milford Haven.

The idea came from school council members, and has taken almost a year to come to fruition.

Marion Sizer, the school's administrative officer, said an increase in pupil numbers had meant more play facilities were needed.

Previously a plain, grassed area, the bright, durable new surface means children will be able to play in all weathers.

"We're absolutely delighted to have it," said Marion.

"It will help teach the children to share, improve their motor skills and provide good exercise too."

Mair Lewis, of Pembroke Power Station, who was there to celebrate the official opening last week, said: "It's a wonderful project and so important for children to spend time outside.

"We are thrilled to be able to support it."

The next stage will be to brighten up the walls of the playground, a project that will be supported by Tesco Milford Haven.
